Generation Y: the new depression generation?

Generation Y: the new depression generation?

On Monday November 22, 2010, 12:23 pm EST

By Alina Selyukh

NEW YORK (Reuters) - In college, Matthew Bergh was ahead of the curve, working part-time at a local Starbucks and setting aside a few thousand dollars a year to do what his parents taught him to do -- invest.

In 2008 the markets crashed and the recession interrupted his financial dreams. "As of right now, I can't invest," Bergh said. "I'm saving."

Eighteen- to 30-year olds, known as "Generation Y," have taken a more conservative approach to managing their money -- stashing it in a savings account or under the proverbial mattress.

This generation of investors came of age during a succession of economic earthquakes. They witnessed the dot-com implosion of 2000 and the more recent onslaught of plunging housing prices, the credit crisis, recession, double-digit unemployment and an annihilation of investor wealth.

"The younger generation has not seen a good stock market over their adulthood," said Gordon Fowler, chief executive of Glenmede, a Philadelphia-based wealth manager for rich people. "That had to have some impact on the psychology of younger investors."

Bergh, 22, started looking for a job in January, and sent out more than 200 applications. After graduating in May, he did what thousands of young Americans have been forced to do: he moved back in with his parents and took an internship with Microsoft Corp. His job search continues.

Among his other ways to conserve cash, he has postponed his investments.

Leslie Barrie, a 26-year-old journalist in New York, followed a similar path. After graduating from college in California, she moved in with her parents and pursued low-paying internships before she went to graduate school.

"I try to save as much as possible," Barrie said. She wants to invest for her retirement, but the markets have discouraged her from doing anything other than keeping a savings account.

Even those who work in capital markets are leery.

One 28-year-old man who declined to be named because he is a hedge fund vice president said five years ago he kept about 10 percent of his finances in cash. Now, he keeps 70 percent.

LEARNING GRANDPARENTS' LESSONS

Generation Y's views on money echo that of another generation -- their grandparents. Many of those people learned the value of saving and frugality because they grew up in the wake of the 1929 market crash and the Great Depression.

By contrast, their parents -- the Baby Boomers -- were buoyed by several major bull markets, soaring home values and the proliferation of easy consumer credit.

"Our parents lived it up on debt and then many of them saw their houses get foreclosed, and that was kind of a shock to us," said Robert Eubank, a 20-year-old senior finance major and equity portfolio manager at a student-run investment group at Towson University in Maryland.

"It put that notion of being prepared for a downturn in their heads."

The impact did not spare those with large financial cushions.

A recent Bank of America (NYSE:BAC - News) Merrill Lynch survey found that 52 percent of young, affluent investors seek lower risks when choosing investment strategies, far outpacing all age groups but one. Among those aged 65 and older, 55 percent said they had low risk tolerance with investments.

The scars from the financial crisis may not heal, either.

Younger investors not only are highly vulnerable to market shocks, but "depression babies" carry the memory of volatile times throughout their lives, said Ulrike Malmandier, a professor of finance at the University of California, Berkeley, who analyzed consumer finance surveys from 1960 to 2007.

The post-crisis generation commonly shied away from higher-risk investments, such as stocks.

"Even 20 years after the financial crisis, the effect will be significant," Malmandier said.

MESSAGE 'NOT GETTING THROUGH'

The job market is adding to young people's problems.

The largest age group at more than 92 million Americans is heavily dependent on their parents' money -- and underemployed. A recent Pew Research study found that a third get financial support from families and only four in 10 work full-time jobs.

As a result, the only investing for many younger adults involves retirement saving plans, such as 401(k)s, often automatically created by employers.

Even with those, Generation Y is the least likely of all age groups to invest in stocks or bond funds, according to a Vanguard Group Inc study of its retirement investors.

"There is a very important message that's not getting through," said Christine Fahlund, retirement planning expert at mutual fund giant T. Rowe Price (NasdaqGS:TROW - News).

"The biggest challenge is how do we get people to stop being affected by complete paralysis and despondency."

The good news for wealth managers is that Generation Y is ready to listen.

"They do actually want to learn; they just don't know how to start the process," said Todd Romer, founder of financial education initiative Young Money.

Romer visited 25 college campuses this fall, encouraging students to invest. PNC Bank, General Motors and others sponsored the tour, according to website.

Bergh, who is finishing an internship in his home town of Fargo, North Dakota, wants to get back to his E*Trade brokerage account and resume investing. For now, however, his optimism is muted.

"I've been trying to figure out, where do I have to cut down on my quality of life, and thinking, is it my fault or part of the macro environment?"

His answer? It isn't really his fault.

U.S. More Corrupt in 2010

Oct. 26 2010 - 7:14 pm

A Berlin group, Transparency International, released their rankings of government corruption and the U.S. dropped from its previous ranking of 19 down to 22.  This data excluded the likes of Madoff and Sanford, but it does not bode well for the way

business/government works here in the U.S.  This news also comes as we head to the polls to pick our next leaders who have hopes of lifting us to a more respectable ranking in the world.

I was taken back by this data and then I thought there were a few things that need to be cleaned up in business before we get to the tougher issues of cleaning up Wall Street, overhauling banks, and evaluating how bonds are rated.  Here is a list I came up with that should be easy for us to address to begin to move the good ole USA back up in the rankings:

Anything that has “Shipping and Handling” – Items that are purchase off of television ads or the internet are wonderful and so cheap…and they are delivered to your door.  The items are always presented in their best light and you don’t have to go through the trouble of seeing it in person.  So when I saw a large ad in USA Today there was another must-have item, The Amish Fireplace.  No matter that the Amish would never use such a device (it being electric and all) or that you can buy the same space heater for $20.  This electric fireplace is encased in an Amish cabinet for $298 (plus $50 shipping and handling and another $36 for the extended warranty).   Is there someone at the Postal Service who could look at product and its “shipping and handling”.

Companies That Reduce Your Debt To The IRS – It is so difficult to call the IRS so why not pay someone $600 to get the information for you that is otherwise time consuming and FREE.  You make a payment to a fine service like American Tax Relief (unfortunately shut down at the moment by the federal government, but there are others).  These services call the IRS, I think, tell them how much you owe and even forward the form for you to begin paying the IRS over a specified period of time.  It does give one peace of mind.  Has the IRS thought about calling one of these companies to at least get their client list?

Products Promoting The Acai Berry – One always saves the best for last and what better way to improve your health and put money in your pocket than by being a part of the Monavie team.  This multi-level marketing program not only offers juices with the healing powers of the Acai Berry, but puts you face to face with customers (aka friends and family members) who will help spread the word and buy the product.  Is anyone at the Food & Drug Administration paying attention?

Prisons are full of people who have ideas about how to rip people off, but I think the best ideas are still out there and right in front of us.  Let’s take a hard look at these folks and once we make some progress on these then we’ll be ready to look at something more challenging.

Cal State trustees approve 15% tuition increase

Cal State trustees approve 15% tuition increase

Funds from the two-step hike will be used to add enrollment and classes, officials say. But students say they will be forced to take out additional student loans or defer their educations.

By Carla Rivera, Los Angeles Times

November 11, 2010

As dozens of students protested, the California State University governing board Wednesday approved a two-step, 15% increase in tuition, saying it would use the funds to increase enrollment and classes.

About 40 demonstrators, including students, faculty and staff from several of the university's 23 campuses, held what they called a "protest carnival" outside the Board of Trustees meeting in Long Beach. They urged the board to reject the increase, saying it would force students to shoulder too much of the cost of college.

The increases approved Wednesday will boost tuition for all students 5% for the rest of this school year and an additional 10% for next year. Basic full-time undergraduate tuition next year will rise to $4,884, in addition to campus fees that average about $1,000. The trustees voted overwhelmingly for both proposals. Student fees had already gone up 5% this fall.

Ruben Vazquez, a senior at Cal Poly Pomona, said the higher charges, which follow a 32% increase for last year, will compel him and many other students to take out additional student loans or defer their educations. Vazquez said he gets some financial aid but is also supported by his father.

"They say it's the only option, but they have become comfortable with raising student fees," said Vazquez, 21. "They say they're being affected by budget cuts and the recession, but they're also passing down the burden to those of us affected by the recession."

The tuition increases will raise an additional $27 million this year and $121.5 million next year. Cal State's proposed budget for 2011-12 asks the Legislature to "buy out" next year's increase by adding enough extra funding to the university's budget that students don't have to pay it.

The trustees said the new money was essential to maintain the quality of a Cal State education and would allow campuses to add classes and increase enrollment despite reduced state support in previous years.

"This is a time of a hyper-competitive global economy where we need to have more students have access to higher education," said state Supt. of Public Instruction Jack O'Connell, who is a trustee. "This motion will allow 30,000 more students to have access to college, it will add more courses and more convenient times. A four-year degree will mean a four-year degree."

Several campus presidents also spoke in favor of the tuition hikes.

For Cal State Northridge, the higher charges will mean an extra $11 million for school operations next year, President Jolene Koester said. "It makes a huge difference for academic affairs," Koester said. "How we plan for our students is highly contingent on the actions of this board today."

But many students said they were not persuaded that the higher charges would improve the quality of their educations.

Osvaldo Ortiz, a junior at Cal State Northridge, said that despite previous tuition hikes, he was unable to get into any of the political science classes he needed this semester. "My four-year education plan will probably turn into a five- or six-year plan," said Ortiz, 20. "All students in California are going to be suffering."

Douglas Domingo-Foraste, a Cal State Long Beach classics professor, joined the student protest and argued that the trustees' action would reduce rather than increase access for many students.

"So many students and their families work two or three jobs to be able to afford college, and I think the people on the Board of Trustees have no conception of what it's like to be on the margin," Domingo-Foraste said. "When a student can't take a class because they're having to work more, you're providing less access."

Cal State received $260 million more in state funding this school year than the previous year, as well as about $106 million in one-time federal stimulus money. But officials said those gains failed to make up for previous budget cuts.

Officials said that even with the latest increases, Cal State tuition is lower than at many comparable institutions. And they estimate that 180,000 undergraduates — about 50% — will receive waivers or financial aid to cover the higher amounts.

Officials rejected suggestions that the university is not doing enough to cut expenses. The chancellor's office has trimmed spending by $6 million annually, cut 95 positions and reduced travel expenses by $10 million, said Robert Turnage, assistant vice chancellor for budget.

But with the state Legislative Analyst's Office now projecting a $25-billion shortfall next year, Cal State officials may need to do more, said Steve Boilard, the office's director of higher education.

"Most state agencies don't have the ability to raise money, but Cal State does have the ability to raise fees," Boilard said. "In this budget environment, we'd expect for Cal State, as well as other public agencies, to reduce the costs of what they do rather than increase them."

How to Manage Skin Problems During Pregnancy

Learning how to cope when you have anything but that "mother's glow"

By Elizabeth Weiss McGolerick

From acne to stretch marks, spider veins to dryness, mommies-to-be often encounter a slew of skin issues during pregnancy. Get the skinny on skin care for pregnant mamas and learn how to safely and easily manage your skin woes.

Pregnant women love to hear people say, "You're glowing!" – and really mean it. But when you don't feel beautiful, when you can't hide the betrayals that your skin is committing right there out in the open, it's certainly difficult to believe that you are actually emitting a motherly glow. Rest assured, just like morning sickness, the suffering can't last forever. Here's how to cope with your skin's mutiny during pregnancy.

Breakouts? At my age?

Some pregnant women may experience such ferocious breakouts during pregnancy that it can feel like junior high all over again. Only this time the same methods of treatment are not necessarily recommended.

For any woman who's suddenly managing bumps and blackheads and blemishes, Michelle Young, master aesthetician and USANA Sensé educator, says, "Avoid acne medicated products. They can contain acne-fighting ingredients which are not suitable for pregnant women."

Instead, she recommends cleansing your face morning and night with a gentle, soap-free cleanser – even better if you can find one that contains active botanicals and is formulated without chemical preservatives. "Also, avoid heavy day creams," Young says. "Instead, choose a light, oil-free day moisturizer."

Your stretching skin

One of the most common skin issues in pregnancy is stretch marks. "Unfortunately, nearly 90 percent of pregnant women will develop stretch marks," says Young. If you're having a hard time thinking of these pink and silvery lines as anything but unsightly – rather than hard won "battle scars" – just know this: "There is no magic cure for stretch marks, but there are ways to help prevent them," says Young.

She recommends investing in body lotions and creams that contain powerful collagen-boosting ingredients and botanicals to increase skin's elasticity. "This will help skin stay smooth before, during and after pregnancy." Bonus: The lotion you use over your belly and breasts can also help with any dryness or itchiness you may be experiencing as the result of your stretching skin.

It's only temporary

Though the nine months of pregnancy can sometimes feel like an eternity, knowing there is a light at the end of the tunnel – and a precious baby, too – can help ease your struggles with your fitful and unpredictable skin. "Most skin changes during pregnancy are temporary," Young assures.

"I would suggest eating a healthy, balanced diet, drinking plenty of water and sticking to a skin care regimen with quality products." In other words, be good to yourself – your body is doing some miraculous and intense work right now. Though some of the side effects of pregnancy may not do much for your skin (or self-esteem), rest assured that, just like those junior high breakouts, this too shall pass.

Cold Marketing 101: Turning Conversations In To Qualified Prospects in 10 Minutes

Turning Conversations In To Qualified Prospects in 10 Minutes

In the last post we covered: Prospecting like a Pro. Have you been practicing? Come on. You know if you have or not. You’ve either been out and about meeting new people or you haven’t.

You’ve either been networking online and creating conversations with people or you haven’t.

Which is it? You need leads every day and I don’t think it really matters how you do it. It matters THAT you do it!

It might matter to you because how you do things has an impact on how much you enjoy your business which in turn determines how much you do of it.

You must find a way to prospect like a pro so that you can do it naturally every day.

Let’s talk about a really whizzy way of creating conversations and turning them into qualified prospects in just 10 minutes.

You’re out and about and you meet someone you like the look of. Maybe they have a sparkle in their eye, or they give you great service at the restaurant.

Now if you’re just waiting for people to come to you you’ll let that opportunity slip by. BUT if you’re committed to prospect like a pro you’ll find a way to CREATE A CONVERSATION.

Here’s the conversation formula I use to create a conversation:

Compliment or remark on something positive about the person or

Remark on something that is happening to you both such as, ‘How long have you been waiting here? Or ‘I hope it stops raining soon, or isn’t the coffee worth queuing up for here …’ You get the picture.

No talk about illness and scurvy! No moaning and belly aching. Just nice chit chat that lifts the energy around you and creates a rapport between you. Remember to SMILE and look them in the eyes when you talk.

People are usually very happy to chat. If they’re not then they disqualify themselves as a prospect for you anyway.

Establish some common ground by following what the person says and tying in anything that is the same for you or someone you know. This creates instant RAPPORT.

If there is a time crunch (they are working and you have to go!) you need to be very quick. Remember you have nothing to lose because you probably won’t see them again.

If you have time ask them about what they do. ‘I really enjoyed the meal and the service was excellent. Thank you. How long have you worked here?’

Ask as many quick questions as you can to gather as much info about THEM as you can and within a couple of minutes you can usually see if they have any desire to improve their situation. (Don’t waste the time talking about YOU!)

If they say oh I like working here and I’m saving up to go travelling round the world for 10 years then they are probably not a qualified prospect for you right now! The timing is off. (This is how you pre-qualify your prospects and don’t waste time)

If they say they’ve been working there for 20 years and are happy as they are … maybe they’re not a prospect for you. You can ask some more questions to be sure. A person with no ambition is not a prospect for you. (Sorry but that’s the way it is)

If they say they’ve been working there for a while now but would really love to move back to …. So they can live nearer their family. Jackpot! Here you have identified a NEED and they may be a prospect for you.

Gather their info quickly like a spy in the night! I like to use my phone. If you give out hundreds of business cards and wonder why no one gets in touch there is a clue in there.

YOU need to take control of the process if you want to prospect like a pro.

You say something like this, Well Donna, it was great to meet you. I know you’re busy and I have to run too but I was really impressed with the service you gave me. You know you mentioned that … XXX whatever their hot button might be …

I partner with a company that enables me to … (work from anywhere) or (work around my kids from home) or earn an additional income so I can send my kids to Drama School or ….

I don’t know if you have the skill set they’re looking for but I could send you some information about it and perhaps it will be a match for you too. If not no worries but it might be a way for you to XXX

Gauge their response. If they are nodding and, showing interest you say, ‘Ok let me take your contacts details quickly and I’ll be in touch.’

If they don’t look interested (they usually do if you’ve followed the formula) you can qualify them again by saying, ‘Does that sound good to you, or would you like to receive some information?’

Whip out your James Bond phone ever so smoothly and add them as a contact so they can see what you’re doing. Ask for their phone number, email and repeat back their name.

Finish it up with finding out when is the best time to call them. Tell them you will call them then ie; Tuesday evening around 8pm, or a weekday evening this week. It’s not a firm appointment but ensures they expect your call, and you waste less time playing phone tag.

Bid them good bye. Big smile and leave them feeling that their day was better for having met you; whether they join your business or not.

Follow up quickly.

There are a million different ways to do this and all of them work as long as you find your flow and create positive conversations with people. You can qualify people as prospects, like a pro, easily once you practice and develop your confidence.

The only way to develop your confidence and skills is to practice A LOT. Go prospect like a pro and create as many conversations as you can this week. Then consciously qualify them and practice turning them into real prospects for your business.

It’s proactive, exciting and it works. Remember not to be attached to the outcome. Your job is to qualify them as a prospect and send them the information tool but that’s a whole other blog …

New Vision International (Vemma) FTC Law Suit

BK Boreyko New Vision International & Vemma Founder

Multi -Level Marketing Company to Settle FTC Charges
That It Made Unsubstantiated Claims That Its "God's Recipe"
Dietary Regimen Could Cure ADD/ADHD

FTC News Release, December 8, 1998

New Vision International, Inc., a multi-level marketing company that sells nutritional supplements, its affiliated company, NVI Promotions, L.L.C., and their principals, Jason P. Boreyko and Benson K. Boreyko (collectively "New Vision") have agreed to settle Federal Trade Commission charges that they made unsubstantiated claims in their advertisements for a combination of New Vision dietary supplements they called "God's Recipe." In a separate agreement, Max F. James, a high-level distributor of New Vision products, has also agreed to settle FTC charges over his role in selling God's Recipe. The ads claim that God's Recipe can cure Attention Deficit Disorder or Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder ("ADD/ADHD").

New Vision International, Inc., and NVI Promotions, L.L.C. are based in Scottsdale, Arizona. Max F. James resides in Roseville, California.

This is the FTC's first case involving ADD/ADHD, a behavioral disorder which affects up to 2.5 million school-aged children in the United States. ADD/ADHD's symptoms include inattention, impulsiveness and hyperactivity. Although these behaviors are common in nearly all children at times, in children with ADD/ADHD the behaviors are chronic and age inappropriate. The most commonly prescribed medications for treatment of ADD/ADHD are stimulants, such as Ritalin.

"The ads exploited parents' fears of prescription drugs like Ritalin by making claims that God's Recipe was a natural, safer alternative for treating ADD and ADHD," said Jodie Bernstein, Director of the FTC's Bureau of Consumer Protection. "New Vision lacked the substantiation the Commission requires for that claim. Companies or individuals who make health-benefit claims for dietary supplements or other products must substantiate those claims under Commission law. Supplement marketers should refer to the FTC's recently released 'Dietary Supplements: An Advertising Guide for Industry' for specific guidance on how to comply with this requirement," Bernstein advised.

New Vision sells a wide variety of dietary supplements through independent distributors. New Vision has developed a multilevel marketing plan that allows distributors to earn money by selling the products at suggested mark-ups to consumers and by recruiting and training other individuals to be distributors of New Vision products.

New Vision's written materials and audiotapes touted three dietary supplements that comprise God's Recipe -- "PC Grape Seed Extract with an Herbal Blend" (a mineral tonic drink); "Essential Minerals" (an antioxidant capsule); and "Multi-Enzymes with Alfalfa/Barley Sprouts" (a multi-enzyme tablet) -- as a natural alternative to the prescription drug Ritalin for children suffering from ADD/ADHD. Similar products are also found in a typical health food store, as well as through other marketers of nutritional supplements.

According to the FTC's complaint detailing the charges, the respondents did not have a reasonable basis to substantiate their claims that:

  • God's Recipe can cure, prevent, treat or mitigate ADD/ADHD, or its symptoms;
  • God's Recipe is an effective alternative treatment to the prescription drug Ritalin; or
  • testimonials from consumers in their ads reflect the typical or ordinary experience of consumers whose children have used God's Recipe.

In two separate settlements to these charges, announced today for a public comment period, the respondents, when advertising God's Recipe or any other food, drug or dietary supplement, would be prohibited from representing that:

  • such products can cure, prevent, treat or mitigate Attention Deficit Disorder or its symptoms;
  • such products can cure, prevent, treat or mitigate Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder or its symptoms; or
  • such products are an effective alternative treatment to the prescription drug Ritalin for Attention Deficit Disorder and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder;

unless they possess competent and reliable scientific evidence to support the representation at the time the representation is made.

In addition, the respondents would be prohibited from representing that the use of any food, drug, or dietary supplement can treat, cure, alleviate the symptoms of, prevent, or reduce the risk of developing any disease or disorder, unless they possess and rely upon competent and reliable scientific evidence that substantiates the claims at the time they are made. The proposed settlements would allow the respondents to make representations specifically permitted by the Food and Drug Administration.

The proposed settlements would also prohibit the respondents from deceptively representing that any user testimonial or endorsement of a product represents the typical or ordinary experience of members of the public who use the product.

In addition, the proposed settlement with the New Vision respondents contains requirements designed to ensure that they effectively police the advertising practices of their independent distributors.

Finally, both settlements contain standard record keeping provisions designed to assist the FTC in monitoring the respondents' compliance.

An announcement regarding the proposed consent agreements will be published in the Federal Register shortly. The agreements will be subject to public comment for 60 days, after which the Commission will decide whether to make them final. Comments should be addressed to the FTC, Office of the Secretary, 600 Pennsylvania Avenue, N.W., Washington, D.C. 20580.

The Commission vote to accept the two consent agreements for public comment was 4-0. The FTC's San Francisco Regional Office handled the investigation.

NOTE: Consent agreements are for settlement purposes only and do not constitute an admission of a law violation. When the Commission issues a consent order on a final basis, it carries the force of law with respect to future actions. Each violation of such an order may result in a civil penalty of $11,000.

Copies of the complaints, two consent agreements and analyses of the agreements to assist the public in commenting are available from the FTC's web site [search for New Vision] or by calling 202-326-3627. Copies of the documents are also available from the FTC's Consumer Response Center, Room 130, 600 Pennsylvania Avenue, N.W., Washington, D.C. 20580; 202-FTC-HELP (202-382-4357); TDD for the hearing impaired 202-326-2502.
